Stories of Spadina with a Spin

A Place for Wholesome Amusement

SUNDAYS, APRIL 29 & MAY 13, 2018 - 11AM

Inspired by A Place for Wholesome Amusement, the Ontario Jewish Archives, Blankenstein Family Heritage Centre and FENTSTER teamed up to present a special walking tour featuring Toronto's leading historian on Chinatown and experienced tour guide, Arlene Chan and the OJA's Stories of Spadina guide and Yiddish expert Miriam Borden. Both shared insights into the intersecting Jewish and Chinese histories of Kensington Market and the Spadina area with a special focus on the Standard/Victory Theatre, the subject of the exhibition.

START POINT: Fentster Gallery, 402 College St.

SUNDAY, MAY 6, 2018 - 11AM - FREE, NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Travel back in time to an era when Kensington Market was a thriving Jewish village teeming with kosher bakeries, synagogues, and social clubs.  On this tour, Jewish Toronto's past—biographies of its former inhabitants;  the sounds;  the smells;  Yiddish language;  religious, social, and political attitudes—is brought to life. Visits to the architectural gems that remain in the area today are supplemented by photographs from the holdings of the OJA as vivid reminders of a once vibrant community.

In honour of the annual city-wide Jane's Walk, the OJA put a new spin on our popular Stories of Spadina walking tour with special stops at FENTSTER and the former Standard Theatre.

Start Point: FENTSTER Gallery, 402 College St.
