Tramvay Lider (Streetcar Songs)

Monday, May 11, 2015, 10:00 am – 11:00 am

First Narayever Congregation, 187 Brunswick Ave, Toronto

With a special presentation by the Ontario Jewish Archives, Blankenstein Family Heritage Centre

In this inspiring hour, Charles Heller performed his song cycle Tramvay Lider, a musical setting of Yiddish poems written by acclaimed Yiddish poet Shimen Nepom who worked as a College St. streetcar conductor until his death in 1939. The poems tell of life on the streetcar, and this performance is a lovely example of Toronto culture echoing through the decades.

With pianist Brahm Goldhamer.

Dara Solomon, Director of the Ontario Jewish Archives presented on the old Jewish sites of College Street.
