Toronto's First Synagogues

This is a legacy exhibtion and content is no longer being updated. Some flash elements may not function properly.

This online exhibition was first created in 2004 through a parternship between the Ontario Jewish Archives and Ryerson University with support from the Canada's Digital Collections granting program.

The exhibition investigates the rich history and cultural significance of some  of Toronto's first synagogues that are still located in their original buildings. It provides an opportunity for visitors to explore the unique character of these buildings through texts, photographs, historical documents and audio/video clips. Using material from the collections of the Ontario Jewish Archives, as well as the holdings of the individual synagogues, this site presents a wealth of information about the history of both the synagogues and their congregations.
