Summer Camps

Local children attended summer camps at Carman and Crystal City in Manitoba and the Canadian Young Judaea official camp for the Eastern area, Camp Hagshama near Mont Tremblant, Quebec. Given the ample access to outdoor activities in the region, many families also kept cottages in popular local spots, such as at Loon Lake. B’nai Brith sponsored summer camps for Jewish youth as part of its regular community activity. Mendy Kirch, of Fort William, was the program supervisor of Camp Hagshama in the late 1940s. The camp director at that time was Hugh Silverman of Montreal. The camps were for Jewish boys and girls aged 13 to 16. Older campers also participated in the leadership group Chalutzim.
