Young Judaea

Young people in the community often joined Young Judaea, which was established in 1925 by Arthur Endelman, David Rubinstein and Jean Gluckstein. From the late 1940s to 50s, they had about 13 members and meetings took place on the second floor of the Jewish Community Centre on Pine Street. In addition to engaging in discussions and educational sessions on topics relating to Jewish studies and Israeli politics and issues, they would also hold annual conventions at different locations. Youths would travel long distances to attend these conventions, which would include young people from all over the north, from cities such as Cochrane, Timmins, South Porcupine, North Bay, Sudbury and Sturgeon Falls. Judy Feld Carr recalls that these conventions were extremely important to Sudbury's Jewish youth, for "other than going to cheder and learning Hebrew from a rabbi, we needed that kinship with other Jewish kids, and that's how we got it."
