Summer Camps

Camp Shalom, 1965

Camp Shalom, ca. 1965

A large number of Sudbury's Jewish youth also attended local Zionist camps such as Camp Shalom and Camp Solelim. Camp Shalom was established in 1948 by the Zionist Organization of Canada (ZOC). It was open to children nine to 13 and was located in Gravenhurst, about 250 km from Sudbury.

Camp Solelim was situated 12 miles south of Sudbury. It was purchased in 1965 by the Zionist Organization of Canada from the local B'nai Brith Chapter who owned land on Clearwater Lake. It had been called Camp Elohim before that time. It was used as a training centre for teens who were 14 and a half to 16 years of age. The youth were exposed to activities such as sports, hiking, arts and crafts as well as Jewish and Zionist programming.
