Cemeteries

The establishment of a Jewish cemetery seems not to have been a high priority for the Sons of Jacob Congregation. Rather than establishing their own cemetery, the community mainly relied on cemeteries in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. There may have been occasional burials in Krugerdorf, however, most wanted to be buried near their kin in the big cities. This trend may account for the lack of urgency in establishing a Chevrah Kadisha, or burial society, in the city to oversee an exclusively Jewish cemetery. It was recalled that Rabbi Monson conducted ceremonies in Toronto for members of his former congregation in North Bay, and evidence suggests that most families purchased plots in and around Toronto.
