Social Activities

North Bay residents have been afforded ample opportunities for outdoor activities. Many in the community also recalled that people tended to own summer cottages on Lake Talon and Lake Nipissing, where it was quite common for different Jewish families to own several adjacent cottages and to coordinate their summer vacations. Sailing, fishing and hiking are popular activities in the summer. Skiing, curling and skating are immensely popular in the winter. Indoor sports are also popular in the winter.

The common centre points for Jewish social activity in North Bay have been in the rallying of support for philanthropic efforts and the fundraising activities for Israel Bond campaigns. These efforts have brought together the congregation’s diverse social organizations such as Hadassah for women, B’nai Brith for men and Young Judaea for youth. While many of the activities of these groups were conducted separately, on major holidays they would be drawn together to celebrate Purim plays, Chanukah dinners and break the fast dinners after Yom Kippur, among other yearly activities.
