Population

The number of Jewish residents within Sudbury during the 1940s stood at approximately 85 families. The numbers began to decline during the 1960s. For instance, in 1963 there were 55 families in town, and by 1969, the number fell to 40. More and more of the children began attending universities in Montreal, Toronto and other cities across Canada and the United States, and most of them did not return to their childhood home after their graduation. The 2001 Census indicated that 200 Jewish residents were living in Sudbury. Due to the presence of the university and hospital, which served many of the northern cities and towns, there was a healthy number of Jews living in town. However, many of those citizens have been unaffiliated, and as such, have not attended services or taken part in local events.
