Cemeteries

The Shaarey Shomayim Jewish cemetery was established on Arthur Street in Fort William in 1910. It is an exclusively Jewish cemetery. Manuel “Mandy” Helper was the president of the shul’s Chevrah Kadisha from the 1970s until around 1995. The responsibility for the cemetery and burial society was subsequently taken over by Syd Halter with assistance from Vicky Dodick. Recent attempts to maintain the historic cemetery in perpetuity have been supported by fundraising efforts to establish a Shaarey Shomayim trust, administered by the Winnipeg Jewish Foundation, with contributions from Paul Shaffer and other eminent former Jewish residents of Thunder Bay.
