Youth Groups

The first Young Judaea group organized in North Bay was established in 1922 by the group leader and organizer Henry Wiseman. Closely associated with the activities of the Hebrew school programme, the local Young Judaea chapter would have interacted primarily with their nearest neighbouring peer groups in Kirkland Lake, Sudbury and Timmins, which were also established in the 1920s. At times during the 1950s and 1960s the group struggled to maintain a regular membership base.

Youth activity included camps during the summer such as Balfour Manor Camp, Camp Shalom, Northland and Camp Arowhon. All of them were outstanding and provided the youth with an opportunity to swim, sail, canoe, horseback ride and associate with other Jewish kids. Balfour Manor Camp was located in Muskoka near Gravenhurst, and was run by Ted and Irene Granovsky. Allen and Gordon Rosenberg were counsellors there in the 1940s. They taught canoeing, leading trips through the Severn River and around Port Carling.
